Week 3 Lab Conversation

Q General Guidance: You should read through this week's assigned lab and/or Peerceptiv material before you make your post, so that your post will be informed, and you avoid posing a question that is answered in the course materials. General Format: You are required to make ONE post to each week’s lab discussion board. Your required post must contain 50 words at minimum and be written in your own words. Your grade will be determined by your demonstration of three areas of communication: application, critical thinking, and writing. Deadline: Your required post is due by 11:59PM, Wednesday. Late posts will be penalized 0.5 points (20%) per day late. NOTE: We recommend that you avoid using the smartphone/tablet Canvas app when submitting your discussion post, because the app frequently fails to associate posts with your corresponding discussion group. ________________________________________ This Week's Posting Prompt: Your lab activity this week will be setting up experiments with lettuce seeds, using your lab kits from Carolina Biological. Once you have set up your experiments, you will write up an introduction and methods section of a scientific paper about these experiments as Peerceptiv Assignment #1. Next week, you will write up the results and discussion sections for the same experiments as Peerceptiv Assignment #2. You will want to use your "Handbook for Writing in Biology" chapters 1-6 as a reference for writing your intro and methods this week and in answering ONE (or more, if you so choose) of the below questions. 1. What is the purpose of the introduction and methods sections of a scientific paper? 2. What is the role of statistics in data analysis? 3. What is a null hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis? 4. What is a p-value? What does it mean and what is it used for? 5. What is the standard error of an experiment? How is it related to the sample size? 6. What aspects of the experimental design of the seed germination experiments could be sources of error? How would you re-design the experiment to remove these sources of error? 7. After reading over the laboratory instructions, what was your thought process with regards to generating a biological hypothesis for this experiment? Discuss any key pieces of information that allowed you to generate your particular hypothesis. 8. Why is having an appropriate sample size important in terms of your experimental design? Is your sample size appropriate in the germination experiments (or is it too small or too large)? Why or why not? If it is too small, what should we do? 1. What is the purpose of the introduction and m

The introduction section allows the researcher to provide some information about the subject including the previous work in the area that the researcher is exploring. The introduction also allows the researcher to give the reader some information about what they hope to achieve with their experiment or study and how it might further the research. The methods section of the paper explains to the reader in as much detail as necessary, the manner in which the researcher performed the experiment.
